Industrial Supercapacitor Uninterruptible Power Supplies

An uninterruptible power supply or uninterruptible power source, commonly abbreviated as a UPS, is an electrical apparatus that provides backup power to a load when the input power source or mains power happens to fail.

Batteries are a common form of energy storage for uninterruptible power supplies as they have a high energy density of 10 to 100 watt-hours per kg. However, uninterruptible power supplies with battery backups are not durable enough for industrial applications or rugged enough for deployment in harsh environments. Common pitfalls for these solutions in a wide range of industrial applications include limited operating temperatures and longevity of its operating life.

Supercapacitor vs Battery Uninterruptible Power Supplies

Supercapacitors, also commonly known as electric double-layer capacitors, or EDLCs, are an emerging form of capacitor offering 10 to 100 times more energy density than their electrolytic capacitor counterparts which only offer 1 to 10 watt-hours per kg. In addition to the supercapacitors impressive energy density, the supercapacitor also has a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C making it suitable for a wide range of industrial applications where embedded systems and in-vehicle computers are deployed. The long operating life of up to 10 years or 500,000 charge-discharge cycles makes supercapacitor based uninterrupted power supplies a reliable industrial power backup solution.

Energy Monitoring and Management Protecting Data Loss and Corruption

Reliable supercapacitor-based power backup systems require fundamental techniques such as charge and discharge control, active load balance and regulated power output. Soft system shut downs should be automatically initiated when the power goes out to prevent data loss and corruption.

Introducing DIN-Mountable and PCIe Based Power Backup Solutions for Embedded Systems and In-Vehicle Computers from Neousys Technology

Combining supercapacitors and their very own patented architecture, our partner Neousys Technology have introduced revolutionary supercapacitor-based power backup solutions in a DIN-Mountable or PCIe based footprint for industrial applications. Compared to alternative battery-based UPS not suitable for harsh environments, the PB-9250J-SA DIN-Mount uninterrupted power supplies or PB-2500J PCIe based uninterrupted power supplies offer wider operating temperatures, extended operating life and provide adequate backup time to secure your embedded controller against unforeseen power outages.
